Staying Safe When Alcohol’s Involved

Whether at a bar, a restaurant, a wine tasting, or elsewhere, many first dates involve drinking. While alcohol can take the edge off and help settle first-date nerves, it also has a powerful impact on our inhibitions, making it harder to make thoughtful decisions and notice red flags.

While we usually suggest skipping the drinks on a first date, we also know that drinking is a regular part of dating for many people. If you do decide to drink, it’s worth planning ahead so you can stay safe and comfortable.

Here are some ways to keep yourself safe when alcohol’s a part of the picture:

1. Set a Drink Limit for Yourself

Before the date, decide how much you want to drink—and stick to it. Setting a limit ahead of time will help you honor your boundaries around alcohol in the moment. If you’re unsure how alcohol will impact your judgment on the date, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

2. Have a Plan for Getting Home

Be in charge of your own transportation so you can leave safely whenever you’re ready. Whether you’re using a rideshare app, having a friend pick you up, or taking public transit, having a clear plan for getting home gives you peace of mind while you’re on the date.

3. Don’t Leave Your Drink Unattended

Keep your drink in sight at all times, and only accept drinks directly from the server or bartender. Substances used to tamper with drinks are typically odorless and tasteless, making them impossible to detect. If you’re unsure if your drink’s been drugged, don’t finish it.

4. Go Slow and Stay Hydrated

As you drink, pace yourself. Make sure you’re drinking water throughout the date and, if possible, eating something, too. This way, you’ll stay clear-headed so you can make intentional decisions throughout the date.

5. Understand Alcohol’s Impact on Consent

As we said before, alcohol lowers our inhibitions—and that can profoundly impact decision-making. According to a recent study, first dates are much more likely to end in sex as more alcohol is consumed. However, it’s important to remember that true consent cannot be given when either person is intoxicated. If either person is significantly intoxicated, it’s not the right time for sex. When in doubt, wait. If it’s meant to happen, it will—when both people are in the place to thoughtfully make that choice.

Whether or not you drink on a date is up to you—and if you choose to drink, you can still take steps to protect your safety. A little planning and awareness go a long way, helping you remain comfortable and in control throughout the date.
